Empowering Youth for Junction Creek 2022 – REGISTRATION NOW OPEN
Are you a teen interested in learning about Junction Creek and the environment in your neighbourhood, while making positive impact in your community? We are excited to announce the return of a FREE Empowering Youth for Junction Creek program led by youth for youth!
This summer, the Empowering Youth for Junction Creek program will consist of weekly 2-hour sessions from July 5th to September 1st in 3 target communities in N’Swakamok/ Greater Sudbury: Lively, downtown/Flour Mill, and Garson. Youth 13-18 years of age from all over N’Swakamok/ Greater Sudbury are encouraged to register.
The program is welcoming to all backgrounds and levels of experience and will begin with an orientation to help participants get to know one another, mentors and feel comfortable to participate in the program activities. The program is designed to give teens a chance to explore and connect with nature in a variety of ways, share their voice, and interact with like-minded individuals. Participants will gain knowledge and tools about local ecosystems, conservation and sustainability.
The program will introduce participants to local experts, Knowledge Holders and leaders in the community, all while engaging in fun and educational activities ranging from:
- Birding along Junction Creek
- Guided nature hikes
- Creating your own Sudbury tree identification guide
- Invasive species identification and removal
- The regreening of Sudbury and Junction Creek
- Reptile Tracking
- Water sampling and benthic bug collection/identification
- Litter cleanups along the creek
- Nature art and more!
Participants will also receive take-home resources and activities to explore independently with their newly learned skills! Best of all, they will become a local steward and help make a difference in their community all while getting the opportunity to gain volunteer hours, learn about local nature, and have fun!
